Primary school lesson on soil

October 16, 2019 | Filed under: blog, ecology, environment, outreach, teaching and tagged with: outreach, public engagement, soil

I visited a Derbyshire primary school to contribute to a lesson on soil for 7 year olds. It was great fun doing experiments on permeability with the children and I also took the opportunity to break down stereotypes of who can be a scientist. I brought in an auger and showed a picture of a soil core from Ainsdale dune slacks where the difference between organic and mineral soil was clearly visible. We also handled soil samples from the Kalahari and local peat. The children were very receptive to understanding about different soil types and the importance of soil.
